Since retiring, I've been volunteering for short term agricultural development projects in developing countries. At last count, I've worked in 24 different countries counting Peace Corps, all with cultural differences from each other and from the US. One of the benefits of that experience is to see other countries, especially nonWestern countries, from a different viewpoint than what the MSM gives you. The two are not at all the same. Another benefit is to be able to explain to Americans that the image they have of foreign countries is often at odds with the reality.

Something interesting is to see that a person's profession is a better predictor of their behavior than their ethnic group. A Malian goat herder has more in common with a Texas goat raiser than either has with say lawyers in their own country.

When I was at Oberlin the only thing that kept me sane was spending a couple hours a day at Warner playing b-ball. I visited this past reunion and the floor is still there with the overhead running track, but the basketball hoops are gone.

The other thing that helped get through the long winters was snowballing. Killed lots of No Parking signs. One time I threw a snowball that was supposed to land like a mortar on the sidewalk next to some girl walking toward the field house while wearing Cossack boots. It went down her boot instead. Sorry.
