After I stopped trying cases several years ago, I've advised on legal ethics, my field, including many legal services agencies pro bono, written legislation, written articles, and returned to writing books.

My most recent book, Trial Lawyer: A Life Representing People Against Power, will have its publishing launch on June 7, 2022. A new piece of legislation, to prevent secrecy in litigation where public dangers are involved, is now on the CA State Senate floor.

I'm still playing full-court basketball (with Bill Balin '69) and have picked the saxophone back up to get my chops together to play in a jazz combo.

When Jacob (J.A.) Spell and I met in Barrows during freshman orientation, we started playing together in the student lounge. During our freshman orientation dance, JA and I asked to sit in with the band, which were a bunch of juniors from Men's CoOp. They offered us jobs with the band. I thought THIS is why I wanted to come to a school where everyone loved music!

(JA, who was blind, left Oberlin in about March. The Conservatory was not a good place for him, given that his skill set was a great genius for playing everything he heard, but without notes in front of him.)
