Kim Solez, M.D. has been an international leader in pathology for over three decades. He is Professor of Pathology at the University of Alberta and the creator of the NEPHROL Email discussion group, the Banff Classification of Transplant Pathology https://youtu.be/3pv58_3tWHA , The Technology and Future of Medicine Course, and the Future and All That Jazz initiative, and has over 1,200 YouTube videos, and over 105,000 images online on social media. He created the new medical discipline of tissue engineering pathology, and has drawn attention to the fact that single cell transcriptomics, the human cell atlas project, will double the number of recognized cell types in every major organ changing entirely the stories we tell ourselves about normal development and human disease. At the ASHI Banff meeting in Pittsburgh in September 2019 he led discussions about digital pathology, AI, and regenerative medicine in transplant pathology, and presented the first digital pathology white paper in transplant pathology.

2020 is a special year of vision Dr. Solez celebrated 20 years ago in his only article ever in a law journal. In 2000 his assistant Michele Hales had identified a call for papers in an issue of The John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law devoted to cyberMedicine and we responded with an article which is still quite interesting to read twenty years later. July 22, 2020, is the hundredth-year birthday of his mentor Robert Heptinstall. And on March 27th 2020 the stars are all aligned as UofA Health Law leader Timothy Caufield gives the Stewart Cameron Lecture at the World Congress of Nephrology in Abu Dhabi Dr. Solez will be attending on the subject of Battling pseudoscience in the age of misinformation. Stewart Cameron is another of his main mentors and they are still actively working together, currently writing an editorial about the ISN Video Legacy Project which will be 30 years old in 2020.

The 2001 law journal article in The John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law is fascinating because its title "Cybermedicine: Mainstream Medicine By 2020/ Crossing Boundaries" encourages the reader to imagine the present year 2020!

Here is more information about the law journal The John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law:

"The articles published by the Journal seek to illuminate, educate, and provide solutions to current problems or emerging issues in the law of information technology and privacy law. The articles are forward thinking—that is, the articles published by the Journal anticipate problems and emerging issues in the law and provide creative approaches to solving the problems. The Journal is currently read in over 50 countries and has been recognized as one of the most frequently cited technology journals worldwide. Articles published in the Journal examine recent developments in information technology and privacy law, including topics such as global commerce, cyber terrorism, social networking, and criminal law. The Journal publishes both scholarly articles written by legal professionals and comments written by student candidates."

Speaking of student candidates, it is interesting to reflect on the impact of Dr. Solez’s mentor Robert Heptinstall on his later career. Forty-seven years ago in January 1973 when he was a first year PGY trainee in pathology at Johns Hopkins on his cytology rotation he had five Oberlin College Winter Term Project students join his to learn about medical research. No trainee had ever done something like that and Dr. Heptinstall was fascinated by the activity and urged Dr. Solez to continue it. Forty-seven years later Dr. Solez still incorporates undergraduate students in his research! He won the 2016 Tier 1 Clinical Mentoring Award at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry as a consequence of this activity.

One of Dr. Heptinstall’s first acts of kindness when Dr. Solez joined the training program at Johns Hopkins was to observe that because he was tall he had to hunch way over to use the microscope in his cubicle and recommended that he get a microscope stand. He has used various microscope stands ever since. In 2016 the students working with Dr. Solez created a collage of their favourite images posted by Dr. Solez online to decorate his microscope stand and that microscope stand collage is now one of the most memorable visual features in his office.

In June 1972 Dr. Solez showed up at Johns Hopkins a month early wanting some research experience before his residency began. Dr. Heptinstall was happy to provide Dr. Solez with research exposure but also suggested he “Take and break and smell the flowers.” That bit of advice is now on the pillow on the “buddy bench” in the corridor around the corner from Dr. Solez’s office.
