I was sorry to hear that Bill died in 2000. He was a gentle soul with a wry sense of humor.

The Oberlin Archives passed this obituary on to me as I was reseaching some more details about Bill.  It's an excellent tribute.

Thanks for posting the tribute, Paul. I'm glad I had a chance to read it and to know that Bill had a full life in the field he loved. We were in several classes together at Oberlin, and I admired his intellect, kindness, and wit.

Bill and I were good friends in Oberlin.  We shared a passion for the classics, even though mine was more towards the classicaltheater. Hee stayed in touch and then in 1971 I went to Berlin for what I thought would be a few months stay turned into five years.  During those years, Bill and I sahred many a lovely dinner, walks through the orivate collections of his musem, and late night after opera (my hood) dinners.  I was very ad to learn about Bill's passing in 2000.  I think of him often.  He was kind, brilliant and had an infectious smile that I remember well tomthis day.
